Alright, folks, listen up! When it comes to your heart, you trust it to a cardiologist. For your skin, a dermatologist. And for your eyes, an optician. But when it's time to straighten those pearly whites, you need to put your trust in an orthodontist – the only specialist capable of aligning your teeth, jaw, and bite (contrary to popular belief, dentists aren't qualified in this specialized branch of dentistry).

But finding the right one can feel daunting. Where do you go? How do you find the right orthodontic treatment for you? What questions should you be asking? Well, that’s why you’re here reading this post, we’ve got some tips for finding the right orthodontist for you.

So, first things first. Do your research.
Google orthodontist near you, check the reviews, ask around. Compile yourself a little list of the orthodontic offices around you and ask your friends or family about any recommendations they may have. Looking around never hurt anybody.

After you got your list all made up, book some consultations. Most clinics offer free orthodontic consultations. Don't be afraid to go to multiple and get second opinions. That way, you can find the best price!

The consultation
While your in your free consultation, there are some questions you should ask.

Some good questions to ask are:

  • Where did you complete your Orthodontic Residency program?
  • What is the cost of the treatment plan?
  • How long will the treatment plan take?
  • What kind of post-treatment follow up is necessary?
  • Do you have patients I could contact for references?
  • Are you board certified by the Canadian Board of Orthodontics?

In your first consultation, the orthodontist will go through all your treatment options which can include metal  braces, clear braces (also known as ceramic braces), Invisalign, lingual braces and other options. They should take the time to explain the benefits of each type of braces to you and which orthodontic treatment will be the best fit for you and your lifestyle.

Financing should also be discussed in the consultation as well, some clinics may offer payment options. Finding a clinic that can provide you the best treatment will be useless if you can’t afford it. Orthodontic treatment shouldn’t break your bank, affordable braces and affordable Invisalign are available, it’s just all about finding the right clinic.

Ask yourself: How did it feel?
The way the clinic environment feels is important, you’ll be coming to this clinic for the duration of your treatment so how it makes you feel is important. Note how the staff interacts with you and your overall feelings:  Was the clinic clean? Did it feel welcoming? Were you comfortable? Was the staff friendly? Did you feel comfortable asking questions?

If it feels good to you, that’s a clinic to keep in mind when making your final decision.

Consider the technology and treatment options
Orthodontics is a fast-paced field with plenty of advancements. It’s worth considering if the orthodontist is using the newer technology or if they seem a little rooted in the past. It might be better to opt for an orthodontist that’s up-to-date with all the newest technology and methodology.

Finally, get a second opinion and don’t rush your decision This is a big decision, that’s why you should take your time. Straightening your teeth is a big step, so taking your time to ensure your checking all your boxes is important. We all know the saying “Two heads are better than one” so get a second, third and fourth opinion if you feel you need too.

Your smile, your choice. Never forget that!

Have you been told you need braces? Well you're not alone! Millions of children, teens and adults get dental braces to fix their smiles. Braces might seem a little scary at first, but they're so worth it to end up with beautiful, straight teeth. Let's break down everything you need to know about getting braces on your teeth.

Braces are made up of small metal or ceramic brackets that get glued to each tooth. A thin archwire runs through each bracket and gets tightened over time by your orthodontist. This gentle, constant pressure causes the teeth to slowly shift into proper alignment. Tiny rubber bands also connect parts of the braces to help guide the teeth. While the brackets stay stuck on your teeth, the wires and bands get changed out and tightened at adjustments as treatment progresses.

Braces work by using steady pressure to fix crooked, gapped, or crowded teeth. If your teeth overlap each other or have spaces between them, the brackets and archwires gently push and pull on the teeth until they straighten out. If your teeth are crowded, the pressure from braces creates room for them to settle into better position. Braces put tension on teeth to keep roots firmly in place while the tooth crowns move. This whole process usually takes 1-3 years depending on the severity of the problem.

Braces are often most effective when started in childhood since jaws are still growing, but adults of any age can benefit from straighter teeth too. Orthodontists typically recommend braces for kids between ages 10-14, but every case is unique. Some common reasons people get braces are to fix gaps between teeth, crooked teeth, overcrowding, underbites, crossbites, overbites, and to simply improve their smile's appearance.

The small brackets on braces can be made from ceramic, plastic, or metal. Metal braces are the most common. The wires that connect the brackets are usually made from nickel-titanium and sometimes coated in colorful plastic for a fun look. The tiny elastic bands linking parts of the braces are latex-free. Braces are made from high-quality, non-toxic medical materials.

You may feel some mild soreness for 3-5 days after each braces adjustment as your teeth shift. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease any discomfort. Dental braces don't actually hurt once you get used to them being on your teeth. Proper dental hygiene is super important to avoid irritation. Use orthodontic wax or gel on the brackets if they rub your cheeks.

Getting braces is so worth it for a beautiful, straight smile that will last a lifetime. With good care, braces can totally transform your teeth in 1-3 years. Talk to your orthodontist if you think you might need braces. Straighter teeth really boost confidence and dental health. Braces can be uncomfortable at times, but thousands of people agree - it's worth it in the end!

Have you ever looked at your smile in the mirror and wished your teeth were just a little straighter and brighter? If so, you're not alone! Crooked teeth are one of the most common cosmetic dental issues, but luckily there are great options available today for straightening your smile discreetly and comfortably. One innovative solution to consider is Invisalign clear aligners.

Unlike the clunky metal braces we endured as kids, Invisalign uses a series of customized, transparent aligners to gradually shift your teeth into place over time. The results are nothing short of transformative! Most patients start noticing dramatic improvements after just a few months of treatment. Whether you're a teen, a busy professional, or a soccer mom, Invisalign can give you the straight, stunning smile you've always dreamed of having.

One of the best things about Invisalign is that the aligners are practically invisible. They're made of smooth, clear plastic that blends right in with your natural teeth. Unless you point them out, people will have no idea you're straightening your smile! This makes Invisalign an excellent choice for teens who want to fix their smile without the "metal mouth" look. It's also ideal for image-conscious adults who want subtle results.

In addition to being discreet, Invisalign aligners are designed for maximum comfort. They gently hug your teeth to guide them into proper alignment, without any of the poking and prodding that comes with old-fashioned braces. The aligners are also removable, so you can enjoy the foods you love during treatment. No more awkward steak cutting at restaurants! Just pop out your aligners for meals and slip them back in when you're done.

Oral hygiene is a breeze with Invisalign too. You'll be able to brush and floss as normal, which helps keep your teeth sparkling while they straighten. Compare this to the hassle of flossing with braces, which can be frustrating and time-consuming.

The Invisalign treatment process is easy and convenient. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth, then create a series of custom aligners based on your unique smile. Every couple of weeks you'll switch to the next set of aligners in the series, gradually moving your teeth into better alignment. Your dentist will map out the full treatment plan upfront, so you can see how your smile will transform over time.

If you want to enhance your smile discreetly and comfortably, Invisalign is a great solution to consider. The aligners gently straighten your teeth without restricting your lifestyle or drawing unwanted attention. Just imagine how great you'll look and feel when you reveal your new, gorgeous smile! Don't wait any longer for the straight, beautiful smile you've always wanted. Ask your dentist today if you're a good candidate for Invisalign. It could be the perfect way to gain confidence and transform your smile.

Attention all tooth-havers! It's time to brush up on the difference between dentists and orthodontists. Why should you care? Because knowledge is power, and power leads to a winning smile!

Let's start with dentists. These are your go-to doctors for everything teeth and gums. Fillings, cleanings, cavities - dentists have got you covered. They're like the GPs of the mouth. Sure, they may not get your heart racing, but they provide the baseline dental care we all need. Dentists are there for all your routine dental checkups and procedures. They can take x-rays, clean your teeth, fill cavities, and treat gum disease. You see your trusty dentist twice a year for cleanings to keep your smile sparkling.

Now onto orthodontists - the Connor McDavids of the dental world. Orthodontists specialize in aligning and straightening teeth. Basically, they take disorganized chompers and whip them into photoshoot-ready shape. Braces, retainers, aligners - you name it, orthodontists are the experts. They live for the thrill of the tooth straightening hunt. While your dentist keeps your mouth healthy, orthodontists focus on the aesthetics and alignment of your teeth. They use appliances like braces and Invisalign to gradually shift your teeth into the desired positions over time. An orthodontist is who you call when you want to transform your smile.

While dentists and orthodontists work closely together, there's a reason you don't see your dentist offering up metal wires and rubber bands. Orthodontics requires years of extra schooling and training beyond general dentistry. Orthodontists complete 2-3 years of additional education after dental school to specialize in movable appliances. So while your dentist may recommend you see an orthodontist, they aren't qualified to move your teeth themselves.

The next time you're in the chair wondering whether you're dealing with a dentist or orthodontist, remember - dentists are the Joes keeping your mouth healthy day-to-day, while orthodontists are the Special Forces called in when teeth need serious straightening out! With their powers combined, you're on track for a mouth that dazzles!
