4 Reasons to Get Adult Braces

by Dr. Amer Hussain, on Jan 11, 2020 10:51:00 AM

Whenever we hear braces, we usually think of adolescent or teenager, but that is no longer the case. Adult braces are becoming more common as more adults opt in for orthodontic treatment.

Whether you reason for fixing your smile is cosmetic or a functional one, with the advancements in the orthodontic field there are more options for those who want to straighten their teeth with or without braces.

Is there such thing as “too old for braces”?

No, there is no such thing as too old for braces. Although it is easier to get braces as an adolescent or a teen, it doesn’t mean adults can’t have fantastic results after getting braces.

Straightening your teeth doesn’t have an age limit. If you want to get a healthier, straighter smile you most definitely can regardless of your age.

Top 4 reasons to get braces as an adult

1. Your mouth will be healthier

Since braces require a little extra cleaning and care, your overall dental hygiene will improve (as long as your actually following your cleaning routine). When your teeth are straight they are easier to clean as well. There will be less nooks and crannies for plaque and bacteria to build up in which will decrease your chance of cavities, tooth decay and other issues.

When you straighten your teeth with braces, you also relieve  other common health problems that have been linked to orthodontic issues such as

  • Headaches
  • Earaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Digestion problems
  • Sleep apnea
2. Feel good, look good

When you have crooked teeth or an issue with your smile, you have a tendency to be shy when you speak or smile. These are classic signs of  having a lack of confidence, when you straighten your smile, it helps you feel more confident in yourself.

There is an old-aged saying “when you feel good, you look good”. Having a smile you feel confident and happy about will help you feel more secure and confident in yourself.

3. Treatment Options

When children and adolescents get braces, 9 times out of 10 the parents are the decision makers, but as an adult you are completely in charge of all aspects of your orthodontic treatment.

With the advancements in treatment options ranging from metal braces to invisalign to lingual braces and more; there is a variety of options for those who want more control over their aesthetic and treatment time.

Your orthodontic treatment options may include:

  • Metal braces
  • Clear braces or ceramic braces
  • Lingual braces a.k.a Damon braces
  • Self- Ligating braces
  • Clear aligners or Invisalign

4. Save money
Braces help resolve orthodontic issues and when coupled with proper dental hygiene decreases your chances of cavities, gum disease, costly procedures like tooth extraction and the chance of prosthetics in the future.

Certain orthodontic issues like misaligned bites can actually wear down on your teeth. This wear can lead to chipping, cracking and even total loss, which will cost you more in the end.  It’s very clear how investing in braces could save you money down the line.
